Welcome to the Memory of Water podcast. In our first episode, Artistic Director, Mary Conlon talks with Iwona Zając, the artist who represents our Polish partner at the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre. She describes her practice, including her iconic Gdańsk shipyard mural, and her artistic interventions for the international residency programme in Greece, Poland and Scotland.

Iwona’s artistic practice explores themes of longing, dreams, and attachment to a place and its past. Her works pay attention to emotions that stem from human experience and the intimate parts of our lives. She starts with the location of a project, collecting detailed information and meeting with the people to whom it will be directly or indirectly related. To avoid intrusive interventions, she develops strong relationships of trust with people, including inviting them to cooperate. Her practice carries respect for time, labour, and care.

You will find all the Memory of Water podcasts featuring the project artists and curators from six cities here.
